Light and Dark - 2004

An ongoing series of works made and shown in a variety of contexts and sites. Initially this work was exhibited in a very small attic at the top of 6 flights of very narrow and rickety stairs! I blacked out the space and asked that only one or two visitors enter the space and view the work with small penlight torches. The images were made more alive this way and made the experience of viewing these works far more intense. This has been something I have been thinking about for a long time - how to make people spend time in front of photographic images.

Keeping Up Appearances - 2006

Artist Statement:
Keeping Up Appearances deals with contemporary anxieties, it references both political crises and human frailty. It is about those fragments in time when all is not as it seems – at once all that seemed safe now threatens.
Investigating emotional connections to environment, physical vulnerability, and fear this work offers contemplative juxtapositions of the duality of life; cause and effect, joy and sadness, life and death, self and the other. Its juxtapositions offer the comparative refuge of nature, while prodding the viewer to question the relationships that may (not) exist.
It emphasizes the uncomfortable and fleeting positions we often find ourselves negotiating and allows the impossible – time to examine, calculate and hypothesize answers.

This work was exhibited as part of Undercurrent 07 at the Adelaide Festival Centre, South Australia and also at the Queensland Centre for Photography in 2007.

The Fear Series - 2005

Gregory Ackland’s series "Fear" deals with themes of fear, identity, isolation, survival and belonging. He creates confronting images where there is no clear order of events, or explanation for these situations. His figures are stripped of individual identity and left in a state of limbo, a flux, a non-space in both time and position. These works are journeys without destination, events without outcome, and occupy the intervals between points of departure and arrival. This body of work was selected for the Hatched ’05 : National Graduate Exhibition at Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, Perth, Western Australia.
